First edition of this classic children's story set in Civil War-era Philadelphia and discussing the Underground Railroad, with striking and painterly illustrations by Marguerite De Angeli. Written and illustrated by two-time award-winner Marguerite De Angeli, Thee, Hannah! tells the story of a young Quaker girl growing up in Philadelphia just before the Civil War who longs to have colorful dresses and pretty bonnets instead of her plain, unadorned clothes. However, that changes after Hannah has a chance meeting with an escaped slave who admits that she initially trusted Hannah because of her distinctive Quaker bonnet. The story is told with De Angeli's particular sensitivity and features the specific historical detail--in both text and illustration--that makes her books so special. Book about-fine, dust jacket near-fine with only slight wear to extremities and a couple faint marks to rear panel. A lovely copy.
