Kubasta's The Tournament,
With Very Large and Striking Medieval Jousting Pop-Up

Kubasta, Vojtech. The Tournament. London: Artia for Bancroft, circa 1961.

Early Edition in English. Card Covers. Folio  13" - 23" tall.

Early edition in English of this pop-up rendition of a medieval jousting tournament, with exquisite double-page folio pop-up featuring jousters that can move toward and away from each other. Czech paper artist Vojtech Kubasta is regarded as one of the pre-eminent creators of children's pop-up books. His books, often fairy tale- and nativity-themed, feature unique layered paper engineering that allows for multi-level pop-ups and integrated tabbed moveables. Thus, his pop-ups are independently capable of telling an entire story through illustration and movement. This fantastic pop-up offers something a little different for Kubasta--a jousting scene set at a medieval castle. Pop-up exceptionally fine, text generally fine, toned cloth spine lifting slightly not affecting integrity of book. A beautiful copy.
