(Pop-Ups and Moveables). Clyne, Geraldine, illustrator. The Jolly Jump-Ups and Their New House. Springfield, Massachusetts: McLoughlin Bros., 1939.

Oblong quarto. Hardcover. 1st Edition.

First edition of the first installment in the beloved mid-century Jolly Jump-Ups series, in which the family gets a new home.

Started just before the outbreak of World War II in the United States, the Jolly Jump-Ups series offers a prescient look at what would become a mid-century American ideal, showcasing a happy nuclear family with plenty of disposable income for all their adventures. The Jolly Jump-Ups and Their New House, the first installment in the series, shows the family moving into their new house. Clyne smartly offered a children's book evoking favorite play activities--playing house and playing with dollhouses--and started a series that became a core part of American childhood. All pop-ups lovely and fully functional, single tiny tear to edge of pop-up not touching actual scene, binding unusually nice with only a couple tiny spots to rear board. A near-fine copy, most desirable in this condition.
