Griffis, William Elliot. The American in Holland. Sentimental Rambles in the Eleven Provinces of the Netherlands. Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin, 1899.
Octavo. Hardcover. 1st Edition.
First edition of this travelogue about the 11 provinces of Holland at the turn of the 20th century, with 16 photographic illustrations including one of Queen Wilhelmina's inauguration and a double-page map of Holland.
Though arguably best known today as a Japanophile, William Elliot Griffis was also uniquely dedicated to Holland and spent a substantial amount of time traveling there. This work offers a travel narrative-style overview of the 11 provinces of Holland and their most important sites and experiences such as the tulip fields, the Rhine, and the Dutch Old Masters, with an extra stop at the court of Queen Wilhelmina. Without dust jacket. Contemporary owner signature. A few neat pen underlines. Faint marginal dampstain to a few leaves, tiny gouge to spine and small bump to front board, gilt bright. A near-fine copy.
