Gunther, John. Inside Europe. Again Completely Revised 1940 War Edition. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1940.

Thick octavo. Hardcover. War Edition.

"War Edition" of this indispensable guide to the sociopolitical situation in Europe, carefully detailing the major players and the political stances of individual countries. Perhaps best known for his 1949 memoir about the death of his son from a brain tumor, Death Be Not Proud, John Gunther's early years were spent on journalistic endeavors at the Chicago Daily News. When the Daily News refused to make him their Europe correspondent, Gunther moved to London and quickly secured a job with the London bureau, achieving his original aim. After the publication of Inside Europe in 1936, everything changed for Gunther. He came to be regarded as one of the leading authorities on the sociopolitical situation in Europe, the Middle East, and elsewhere. Gunther quit the newspaper business and devoted himself to books, including numerous editions of Inside Europe, such as this heavily revised War Edition that begins with a chapter on Hitler. Most notable is Gunther's early coverage of the situation confronting Europe's Jews and other groups believed to be opposing Hitler. Gunther carefully catalogs the number of sterilizations, forced expulsions, political executions, and deportations to concentration camps--49,000 that Gunther knew about. Inside Europe proves that the large-scale injustices and atrocities of Hitler's Reich were already publicly known as of 1940. Without dust jacket. Mild rubbing and toning to spine. A very nearly fine copy.
