First Edition of Christmas Carols, 1937,
Beautifully Illustrated by Hendrik Van Loon

Castagnetta, Grace and Loon, Hendrick Willem van. Christmas Carols. Illustrated and Done into Simple Music. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1937.

Folio. Hardcover. 1st Edition.

First edition of this book of popular carols with piano-vocal scores, beautifully color-illustrated by Golden Age illustrator Hendrick van Loon. This book of popular carols includes favorites such as "Silent Night," "Joy to the World" and "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen," all with easy piano-vocal scoring. The author has also included several pages of historical background about the carols. The main draw, of course, is the mixture of full-color and three-color illustrations by Golden Age illustrator Hendrick van Loon. A Dutch-American, Loon was known for his slightly more serious illustration style, which was usually intended for older children and often included historical elements. This production, one of his later works, clearly shows the influence of the 1930s stylistically as well as in color choices. Without rare dust jacket. Interior lovely and fine, only light wear to extremities with minor separation of lamination as often. A near-fine copy.
